When It Comes to Food Porn, Size Does Matter

So, here we have an example of what cooks do when we are bored. It all started out on a slow afternoon in the restaurant. We hadn’t had a customer in almost an hour so we started talking about what to make ourselves for lunch. It didn’t take us long, carnivores that we are, to decide that we wanted steak sandwiches. Now, in case you didn’t know, professional kitchens are very high testosterone environments, so no one flinched when when someone said, “You know what would be awesome? If we made a GIANT steak sandwich!”

Right away, everyone was on board. I eagerly offered up some of my food credit to buy five new york steaks for the cause. I then took two pounds of bread dough I already had rising, and baked off a giant hoagie roll. Within an hour, I had the bread baked and ready to be filled. While I was baking, the cooks were busy cutting onions, peppers, and the five steaks I had bought, and soon they had everything cooking. The final step of cooking was adding the cheese and them putting the filling into the bread.

Once we had the filling in the sandwich, I ended up having to use the parchment paper on the pan to roll the sandwich shut as if I were rolling a sushi. It took us about an hour and a half (most of it was waiting for the bread to bake) to make this monster sandwich. We then cut it up, and was able to feed the entire restaurant staff.

Oh and in case you were wondering, just based off of the price of the steaks I bought to make this monster, this would be about $130 sandwich. Not bad considering that it easily fed ten people.
