Pier 94 is the site of the 11th Annual New York Chocolate Show. This weekend long event, which goes from November 7th-9th, features over 50 of the world’s top chocolatiers and exhibitors offering samples of their chocolate goodies, as well as demonstrations of various techniques and recipes.  The first Chocolate Show was held in Paris ten years ago by Event International, Inc. CEOs Sylvie Douce & François Jeantet. After seeing the enthusiasm of American attendees, Sylvie and Francois chose New York City to host the first American Chocolate Show in 1998. Since then, over 40,000 visitors attend this event every year.

This year’s event started Thursday night with the popular Chocolate Fashion Show, which pairs the skills of top designers from the world of Fashion, and noted Chocolatiers. Among the participants were Narciso Rodriguez, who most recently designed Michelle Obama’s red-and-black election-night dress, Joelle Mahoney, Derek Poirier representing French chocolate maker Valrhona, Richard Capizzi with Grand Marnier, and Jacques Torres. More photos from the event can be found here compliments of Ricky Cheng’s flickr.

The show will end Sunday evening with the American World Chocolate Masters competition hosted by the French Culinary Institute. Competitors will have to create a chocolate pastry, two different pralines, a gastronomic chocolate dessert and a large chocolate showpiece to the theme of “Haute Couture”. During the contest they will also receive a “Mystery Box” with specific instructions to create another small chocolate showpiece. The winner of this competition will go on to represent the United States at the World Finals held on October 14th-16th 2009 in Paris.
